Business Growth through Leadership Programme

Egniol’s Owen Bracegirdle has recently completed the Institute of Leadership and Management Level 3, New Leaders Course, taught through the ION Leadership Programme, led by Swansea University in Partnership with Bangor University. Owen is the fourth Egniol employee to successfully complete a course with ION, showing our sustained commitment to develop and enhance the leadership skills of our staff. Owen said, ‘’Completing this course has given me confidence in initiating new opportunities as well as strengthening working relationships with existing clients.  It’s also taught me situational leadership and management techniques that I can apply to the teams involved within my projects, whether that’s external design teams or with colleagues’’.

Managing Risk from UXO

Background

More than 30,000 tonnes of bombs were dropped on Britain during World War II. Combined with munitions from World War I and MoD firing ranges the risk of encountering Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) has to be a consideration during development. Egniol can help manage the risks from this legacy.

Guidance and Risk

Guidance released by CIRIA in 2009 estimated that 15,000 items ranging from unexploded bombs, grenades and small mortar rounds were unearthed on UK construction sites between 2006 and 2008. The Aston expressway in Birmingham was closed in 2016 for a time and nearby houses evacuated after the discovery of a bomb containing 132kg of high explosive. More recently, London City Airport was closed due to the discovery of a WWII bomb in the Thames. These events have a major impact on Health and Safety, project costs and programme and a structured, risk based approach is needed to manage and mitigate them robustly.

Experience

Egniol have a wealth of experience in dealing with these sites. UXO is considered within a Phase I study where UXO and bomb risk maps are consulted, particularly for the heavily targeted areas during WWII (London, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, etc). If deemed to be at risk we would then consult with specialist organisations to arrange further information to be gathered and a risk management strategy to be drafted. This often involves specialist personnel in site works to continuously monitor excavation practices and utilise non-intrusive surveying techniques to detect UXO underground. Having clarity in the approach makes for a safe and cost-effective project.

Blazing Paddles race to the Final!

On a very sunny Saturday at the end of June, Egniol’s Blazing Paddles Dragon Boat team took to Llyn Padarn, Llanberis, for the annual St David’s Hospice Dragon Boat Festival, raising money for this excellent cause. The team was a mix of seasoned veterans and new-comers, backed by a wonderful BBQ courtesy of Egniol’s Chairman, Peter Dilworth (ably assisted by Alan and David!). A total of 19 crews were on the water for the 2018 event, a wide mixture in abilities with some fierce competition from previous winners and competitors alike.

In the face of this competition, Blazing Paddles set 4th fastest time overall in their final heat, booking a place in the final for the fourth time in five years. With a keen wind blowing down from Llanberis Pass, the final was a very close affair, with all 4 crews finishing within 2 seconds of one another (less than a boats length!). Despite a valiant effort and strong, coordinated paddling, Egniol finished 4th overall, narrowly missing out on the medal places but less than a second.

Owen Stevens joins Egniol

We are delighted to welcome Owen Stevens to Egniol.

Owen is a hugely experienced geoenvironmental engineer and has been involved in the field for over 20 years.  He joins us from Patrick Parsons where he was responsible for the geoenvironmental business across the north of England and prior to that he was at specialist geoenvironmental consultancy REC, where he was Regional Director for their north of England offices.  Owen will be based at our Cheshire office and will be working with our existing ground investigation and environmental specialists to strengthen and build our contaminated land and geoenvironmental offering.

Civil Engineering Graduates

Egniol’s Owen Bracegirdle and Gareth Roberts attended a graduation ceremony at Venue Cymru in Llandudno on Friday, July 6th after achieving first class honours in their BEng Civil Engineering degrees undertaken at Coleg Llandrillo, in partnership with University of Wales, Bangor. And if that wasn’t impressive enough, they both successfully completed their studies while having young families and juggling full-time work! Huge congratulations to both of them from all at Egniol. Both are now focussed on continuing their professional development towards chartership through the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Habitat Mapping Article Published

The development of technology in recent years has revolutionized the methods by which habitat mapping is undertaken and generated. Egniol’s Senior Ecologist Alan Cowlishaw has recently produced an article for Inside Ecology discussing the timeline of ecology survey mapping techniques, including a focus on the future use of hyperspectral imaging.

Stabilizing and Repurposing Closed Landfill Sites

Management of closed landfill sites presents various long term environmental challenges. In particular, the waste stabilization process is specific to every landfill site, and the resultant risks to the surrounding environment associated with landfill gas and leachate require a tailored management approach.

Egniol has been advising a local authority in north Wales on aftercare management of a closed landfill site since 2014. The site comprises both engineered areas and older ‘dilute & disperse’ areas, and has a highly variable waste composition across the site.

The remit of Egniol’s support to the local authority is two fold, to ensure full compliance with the site’s environmental permit whilst ensuring an optimal stabilization of the waste mass; this is imperative for any future permit surrender. Egniol prepared a comprehensive Gas Management Review Plan which was agreed with Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and has been implemented with the local authority. The Plan contains a series of measures aimed to improve the gas production process, reduce fugitive emissions and downsizing of the existing landfill gas engine.

Further work included carrying out of a leachate audit for better understanding of conditions within the landfill cells. A leachate recirculation system was designed and an initial recirculation trial overseen. Further trials are to be carried out in the near future before the long term leachate management approach is finalized.

Egniol has also begun appraisal of the potential opportunities to transform the cost liabilities of the site management to a revenue-generating business. The site already benefits from the existing road access, available space, and spare grid capacity.

A number of potential energy technologies were assessed and presented to the local authority, each providing certain marked benefits in terms of revenue, cost reduction, energy security and environmental sustainability. These options are undergoing further technical and financial feasibility assessments as we continue to work closely with the local authority.

Site Closure and Restoration Works

Egniol has been providing engineering and environmental services in relation to landfill site closure works at a former tin and copper mine in the south west of England since 2007. The site has been undergoing progressive completion and restoration work in readiness for handback to the Local Authority in accordance with the permit and planning requirements. The work has been wide ranging and covered most aspects of the engineering of former landfills prior to return to beneficial use.

In particular we have provided design and construction supervision services for the capping system construction; preparation of a Site Restoration Plant for the use of soil forming waste materials as a waste recovery operation; the creation of a wide range of ecological habitats to form heathland, native woodland, glades and acid and native grassland and integration into a fully functioning ecosystem; design and construction supervision of the surface water management system; design and construction supervision of the burial of approximately 18 kilometres of active landfill gas pipework and lowering of associated infrastructure such as gas manifolds and condensate de-watering points; the re-establishment of a 1.3-kilometre public bridleway across areas of the historical tin and copper mine and the landfill containment cells. Egniol designed and managed the construction of the bridleway following discussions with the Rights of Way officer, Mining Consultants and the British Horse Society.

Ecological Restoration Works Survey

Egniol are working with one of the UK’s top 3 waste operators on the ecological restoration of one of the largest landfill sites in the north west. Waste deposition at the site was completed a number of years ago and following an initial phase of limited restoration the site has remained dormant. Now that the site is to be returned to the land owners, restoration must be completed.

We will be carrying out baseline surveys of the site to help guide a revised restoration plan that will satisfy planning conditions and the land owners requirements, including the surveying of habitats, vegetation, mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. The revised scheme will aim to maximize the ecological value of the site and return it back to beneficial use.

David Homan joins Egniol

Egniol is delighted to announce the arrival of David Homan in our Infrastructure team.  David is a civil engineer with almost 20 years’ experience in the construction industry with a focus on designing and managing infrastructure projects with values up to £20 million within the regeneration, infrastructure, and civil aviation sectors. He has a wealth of design, project management and construction experience working with Consulting Engineers, Civil Engineering Contractors, Housing Developers and Sewerage Undertakers, from planning through to construction. He is proficient in implementation of S38, S278, S104 works for developers and local authorities, liaising with third parties including Lead Local Flood Authorities, Network Rail, Environment Agency and others.  We’re sure he’ll be a great addition to the Egniol team.
